Merchant Center disapprovals that quietly stop sales.

Most disapprovals come from a small set of causes: a price or availability that does not match the landing page, missing identifiers such as GTIN or brand, image problems including added text or watermarks, policy categories the item falls into, and a landing page that failed to load when Google checked. Open the Products diagnostics tab, sort by number of items affected, and fix the largest group first. Most of them are feed problems rather than product problems, which is why they usually recur until the feed itself is corrected.
The failure is silent, which is the real problem
A disapproved product simply stops appearing. There is no drop in campaign performance to investigate, because the campaign is spending normally on whatever is left.
That is why this is worth a recurring calendar entry rather than an occasional look. Sales in a category go quiet, somebody blames seasonality, and the actual cause has been sitting in a diagnostics tab for six weeks.
Price and availability mismatches are the most common
Google checks the price and stock status in your feed against the landing page. If they disagree, the item is disapproved, and they disagree more often than anybody expects.
Sale prices are the usual cause. A discount applied in the shop but not reflected in the feed, or a feed that updates once a day while prices change hourly, will produce this steadily. Currency and tax display differences do it too.
Missing identifiers and thin product data
GTIN, brand and MPN matter more than they look. Without them your items compete poorly even when they are approved, and for many categories they are required outright.
If you genuinely make the products yourself, set the identifier exists flag correctly rather than leaving the fields blank, because a blank field and a declared absence are treated differently.
While you are in the feed, the titles are worth the same attention. Most feeds inherit whatever the shop system produced, and a title that buries the product name behind marketing words costs you matches you would otherwise win. Our Merchant Center title editor rebuilds them from the columns you already have rather than from the title string.
Images, policy and the landing page check
Three more causes account for most of what remains.
- Images with added text, logos, watermarks or promotional badges. The rule is stricter than most sellers assume and it applies to the main image without exception.
- Policy categories. Some products are restricted in some countries and not others, so a catalogue that is fine in one market can be disapproved in another.
- The landing page failing when Google checked it. An intermittent error, a blocked crawler, or a page that requires an age gate or a cookie choice before rendering will all produce a disapproval that looks inexplicable from the product side.
Fix the group, not the item
Sort diagnostics by the number of items affected. A cause affecting four hundred products is a feed rule that needs changing once, and fixing them individually guarantees the problem returns next month.
Then set a reminder to check weekly. Feeds break on ordinary events: a theme update, a currency change, a new supplier import, a sale that ends. None of those announce themselves either.
When did you last open the diagnostics tab
If the answer is that you are not sure, this is worth ten minutes today. Count how many items are disapproved and what share of your catalogue that is, then look at whether any category went quiet around the same date.
If a large block is affected and the cause is not obvious, send us the feed and the account and we will tell you which rule is producing it. Start with the enquiry form, and include what changed on the site recently, because that is usually where the answer is.
Questions we get asked.
Why are my products disapproved in Merchant Center?
- Usually a price or availability mismatch between the feed and the landing page, missing identifiers such as GTIN or brand, images with text or watermarks added, a policy category, or a landing page that failed when Google checked it. The diagnostics tab groups them by cause.
How quickly do products come back after a fix?
- Usually within a few days once the feed updates and the item is rechecked. You can request a review for policy disapprovals, but for feed problems the fix has to be in the feed first or the item simply fails again.
Do disapproved products affect my whole account?
- Individual item disapprovals do not, but a pattern of them can lead to account level warnings, and those are much slower to resolve. That is the practical reason to treat this as a weekly check rather than an occasional one.
Can I put a sale badge on my product image?
- Not on the main image. Added text, logos, watermarks and promotional badges are all disallowed there, and this is one of the most frequent causes of a whole category being disapproved at once.
Should I fix disapprovals one product at a time?
- No. Sort by how many items share a cause and fix the rule that produced the largest group. Fixing items individually leaves the underlying feed problem in place, so the same products fail again after the next update.
