Your traffic dropped and you were not penalised.

A search result page with a dashed answer box at the top, two results below it, and a click line falling away at the right.
The short answer

If your rankings and impressions are steady but clicks have fallen, you have almost certainly not been penalised. You are being summarised. AI Overviews answer the question above the results, so the searcher gets what they came for without visiting anybody. Confirm it in Search Console by segmenting pages where impressions held and click through rate dropped, then change what you publish rather than how you optimise: the pages that still earn clicks are the ones an answer cannot replace.

The pattern that tells you which problem you have

A penalty or a technical fault takes impressions away. Your pages stop being shown. A summary above the results does the opposite. You are still shown exactly as often, and fewer people click, because the answer arrived before the link did.

So the first thing to do is not to audit the site. It is to open Search Console, compare the last three months against the previous three, and sort your pages by change in click through rate with impressions held steady. That segment is your answer.

How big this actually is

Worth knowing the real numbers rather than the panic. Google's AI Overviews now appear on a substantial share of searches in the United States, and where one appears the organic click through rate falls sharply. Contently's April 2026 analysis and the Digital Bloom's 2026 update both measure the classic organic click share down across every vertical they looked at.

What neither found was a collapse. What they found was a split. Informational queries lose clicks to the summary. Commercial and transactional queries hold up far better, because somebody comparing suppliers or ready to buy still needs to reach a real page.

Which of your pages were always going to lose

Pages answering a question that has one correct answer were the most exposed. What is a good conversion rate. How many keywords should an ad group have. What does CPM mean. Those are precisely what a summary is good at, and they were never going to survive it.

This is uncomfortable if a lot of your traffic came from them. It is also clarifying, because that traffic was rarely turning into anything. A reader who wanted a definition and got one was not going to become a customer.

What still earns the click

Three kinds of page hold up. Anything that requires your specific numbers, because a summary cannot know your margin or your account. Anything with original evidence in it, such as a real result with the reporting behind it. And anything transactional, where the searcher is choosing who to work with rather than learning a definition.

There is one more thing worth knowing, and it is the reason this is not only a defensive story. Being cited inside an AI Overview is measurably valuable. The 2026 analyses found brands cited in the overview earning substantially more clicks, both organic and paid, than uncited brands on the same results page. Being the source the answer quotes is now a position worth competing for.

Which means the work changed rather than stopped

The old shape was to publish a lot and rank for a lot. The shape that works now is fewer pages, each with something in it that cannot be summarised away: your own data, a real example, a calculation somebody has to run against their own numbers.

Structure matters more than it did too, and so does how the page is presented in the results, which our SERP snippet preview will show you. A page that opens with a direct, self contained answer to the question in its title is a page an engine can quote. A page that takes four paragraphs to get to the point gets summarised instead of cited.

What to do this week

Pull the segment described at the top: pages where impressions held and clicks fell. Then ask one question about each. Did that page ever produce an enquiry. If it did, it is worth rebuilding around something a summary cannot replace. If it never did, you have lost traffic that was never worth anything, and the honest move is to stop maintaining it and put the effort into the pages that earn enquiries.

If you are looking at a chart that has been falling since spring and you are not sure whether it is this, a penalty, or something you changed, send us the Search Console view and we will tell you which. It takes us an afternoon and it decides what you do for the next six months.

Questions we get asked.

Why did my organic traffic drop but my rankings stay the same?

That combination points at AI Overviews rather than a penalty. A penalty or a technical fault removes impressions. A summary above the results leaves impressions where they were and takes the clicks, because the searcher got their answer without needing to visit anybody.

How do I confirm it is AI Overviews in Search Console?

Compare the last three months against the previous three, then find pages where impressions are roughly flat and click through rate has fallen. Informational pages will dominate that list. Commercial pages usually will not, which is itself the confirmation.

Can I stop my content appearing in AI Overviews?

You can block it, but consider what you are asking for. Being cited in the overview is associated with more clicks rather than fewer, so removing yourself from it usually means losing the visibility as well as the click. The better response is to be the source it quotes.

Should I stop publishing blog posts?

No, but publish different ones. Pages that explain a definition are the most exposed and were rarely producing enquiries anyway. Pages carrying your own numbers, a real example, or a calculation the reader runs against their own business are the ones that still earn the visit.

Is local search affected in the same way?

Less so. Location specific queries still tend to return map results rather than a summary, which is why local visibility has held up better than informational content through this change.
